Introduction to Psychology

Nature and application of psychology. Schools of psychology. Study of methods, biological basis of behavior, sensation, perception and attention; emphasis on understanding motivation; emotions and physiology; cognitive skills, learning, memory and thinking; theories of personality (Freud and Carl Rogers). Maximizing human potential through positive rewards and motivational practices.

Abnormal and Clinical Psychology

Study of psychopathology considering normality and abnormality; biological and socio-psychological causes of pathology. Study of various disorders anxiety-based and personality disorders, organic mood and schizophrenic disorders, introduction to psychotherapy through psychoanalysis and behavior modification. Physical and psychological abuse in creation of behavior disorders. Intergenerational perpetuation of destructive and maladaptive behavior.

Social and Developmental Psychology

Nature, scope and methods. Aspects and phases of development, life stages, groups, in and out groups, social attitudes, leadership characteristics and styles, mass media influences on personality and society. Impact of family and society's expectations on personal development.

Psychometrics

Scope and application of psychological tests. Standardization, objectivity, reliability, validity, statistical techniques, data collection, special tests of abilities and personality. Issues of privacy of data. Respect for human rights in conducting measurements.

History and Systems of Psychology

Philosophical and historical roots in Greek and Muslim cultures; biological and natural dynamics. Spread of scientific psychology; systems and schools of thought including functionalism, behaviorism, gestalt and field theory, Freud, humanistic, existential and cognitive psychologies. Contemporary status of various areas of experimental, social, clinical, comparative, physiological, military, educational psychology. Advertising and mass communication. Psychology and issues in Pakistan .

Cognitive and Affective Processes

Study of perception, learning, memory, thinking and problem solving. Analysis of the roles of feeling, emotions, and motivation in human behavior. Relevance of emotions and motivation to human and social development. Effects of positive and negative attitudes on outcomes. Concept of self-fulfilling prophecy.

aptitude and achievements. Use of Psychological tests in Pakistan . Social and ethical issues in implementation of testing in Pakistan .

Psychopathology and Mental Health

Concept and criteria of normality and abnormality; history of psychopathology; classification of disorders. Study of clinical models: psychoanalytical, interpersonal, behavioristic, humanistic, multimodal, biological. Presentation on clinical model case histories. Psychodynamics of physical and psychological abuse and behavior disorders. Effects of rejection, exclusion and discrimination on mental health. Projection of human rights as an agent for maintenance of positive mental health.

Social Psychology

History, nature and scope of social psychology and its relation to social sciences. Various theories and methods. Study of socialization, interpersonal relations, culture, social norms, conformity, deviance, crime, attitude formation, attitude change, group dynamics, leadership and management, communication and interpersonal relations. Social psychological problems in Pakistan regarding collective behavior, conflict resolution and peace making. Practical analysis of effects of stress, stereotyping, labeling, and attitude formation. Issues of discrimination and human rights as factors in adaptation.

Behavioral Neuroscience

Basic neuroanatomy and sensory aspects. Study of neurotransmitters and metabolism. Motivation aspects of homeostasis, neurotransmitters, isotonic regulation, temperature, aggression, sleep, and eating.

Establishing adaptive behavior. Study of neurological disorders and diseases. Biochemical theory of psychoses. Effects of nutritional imbalances, hormonal disturbance, and diabetes on behavior and mental processes.

Psychology of Women

Image of women in various cultures and religions. Physical and psychological development and gender differences. Menstruation, myths and taboos. Achievement, motivation, expectations, attitudes and behaviors. Pregnancy, motherhood, sterility, menopause and related issues. Muslim thought and third world feminism perspective on women's roles. Introduction to theoretical models and treatment based upon various models. Individual, family and group therapy. Use of eclectic model. Special attention to problems arising from drug and alcohol abuse.

Community Mental Health

Primary prevention of psychopathology. Problems, abuse, poverty, death, and divorce affecting infants, children and mothers. Citizen participation and health services. Aid for deprived and elderly. Social support networks and NGO's. Stress management strategies and illness prevention. Role of hope, humor and health. Behavioral medicine and health.
